While I was flapping around getting everything ready for the first full performance of Talk Nerdy To Me in Nottingham, I was astonished to see how much the room was filling out. It turned out to be a lovely crowd, warm and friendly with a hunger for nerdy jokes. They were an absolute delight throughout and it was a real pleasure to debut this show in front of such a perfect audience, consisting of far more people than I was expecting.
I have watched back the recording a couple of times now, mostly looking for things to tweak and areas to improve, but also to have a chance to sit back and enjoy something that I have created. As comedians we don’t always get the chance to do that as much as a carpenter or a dressmaker. The Nottingham Comedy Festival show was not perfect, there are definitely things to work on, but in general it came together very well and I am delighted with the outcome. I am deeply grateful to John at Late Stage Comedy for his help promoting the show and his support on the day, as well as my wife who has been an incredible help throughout the creative process, alongside the many comedians and audience members who have provided feedback as I have tried things out.
I have mentioned them before, but I really must praise and thank the friends and strangers who came out to see the show. It was lovely to perform in front of a room full of nerds like me, which is exactly what I am hoping to be able to do with the show. They made it the success it was, performing in front of a room that does not have enthusiasm for the subject matter is a chore, especially when the goal is to be as niche and nerdy as possible. The audience’s enjoyment is infectious; the more they are enjoying the performance, the more fun it is to be on stage. To be named ‘best show’ by Late Stage Comedy is an absolute honour and testament to how wonderful the audience were, how well they got on board with some of the crazier moments and it was a pleasure to be able to put nerds like me, who are normally in the back corner of a comedy night quietly watching, front and centre of the audience and to make the show all about them.
I am also grateful to the comedy comrades who have seen the video and provided some very constructive feedback on areas to work on. I am very excited to continue working on this show over the coming months and bring it to more people, who I sincerely hope will love it as much as I do.
