Jimmy Carr faced a major media backlash recently when, during his Netflix-themed Christmas special, the popular comedian and panel show host invaded Ukraine. Carr had previously touted his latest show as a ‘career ender’ and has frequently described it as his ‘darkest’ yet. He is one of a number of comedians who has claimed that the rising tide of political correctness poses an existential threat to comedy and that he wants to ‘go out with a bang’.
The show itself mostly consists of the kind of rape, race and paedophilia jokes that Carr is known for, with the pace expertly building, before he raises the stakes by climbing in to a tank, live on stage, and invading Ukraine. Bizarrely, it has taken several months for anyone at The Guardian to notice, presumably because they all prefer Amazon Prime. Jimmy Carr’s latest warcrime only came to light when a short clip was circulated on social media as an example of the kind of horror that every comedian, presumably, is now involved in.
Amongst Carr’s most vocal critics are the Cancel Culture Secretary, Nadine Dorris, who took time out from abusing people on Twitter to describe the sanctions comedians like Carr would face under proposed Conservative legislation, as long as they don’t have too much property in London. Open mic comedian Ethan Sharp has also criticised Carr’s latest show in a fourteen paragraph Facebook status, claiming to have, “never seen anything so horrible on stage in any of the 7 gigs I have performed at”.
Others have rushed to Carr’s defence, claiming that his invasion of Ukraine represents a major victory in the Culture War and that comedians should be allowed to do what they want on stage as it is clearly all ‘just a joke’.
Protests are expected outside of upcoming Jimmy Carr gigs, which have all been sold out for months, with NATO forces placed on high alert. Carr’s publicity team have also been strangely quiet on social media during the public outcry, with their only post being a retweet of a picture of a cat who hates Jeremy Corbyn, originally posted by Rachel Riley. Jimmy Carr was not contacted for a statement.
